One Room Challenge: Week Three

So we are back at Wednesday day again, half way through the challenge! I am feeling the pressure and not much was accomplished on the homefront this week. Company from Europe was over, mixed in with bike racing and a family birthday left for little time on the decorating front.

I am feeling a bit unmotivated too, not because I don't want to but because we are renting and our landlords are being a bit unclear as to whether they will re-sign a lease. It is up Sept. 1.

Feeling a bit crummy and anxious about it all.

They are sort of talking about selling the house, but with my husband's recent job loss I am not sure we are in the position to be buying.....at least I don't think they will sell it to us what we would like to pay.
Housing in the Vancouver area is ridiculously overpriced.

So that being said, painting walls might not be happening unless we know for sure we are "safe" for another year. So my zhushing of the space will be kept to what I can take with me. So until I know for sure, the roman blinds and new drapes are also on the chopping block. But I will re-vamp the hardware!

I did manage to whip up a pillow addition to the space. You may have seen one like this in my son's room but this one has a slight twist, the trim is black velvet.

I did cut out fabric to make a another pillow but didn't get around to sewing.

I am hoping I can figure out yardage for the slipcovers for the dining chairs and get working on that when my company leaves tomorrow!

Fingers crossed I am not going to be house hunting!

  2. Don't you waste one minute of your precious creative time painting a room you might be leaving. Houses are not selling so fast in NJ...because they are overpriced here, too. I love your sewing skills. I have told you that before. You have an amazing way of getting your piping extra tight, the way I love it! This reminds me of a voice I hear in my head, "baby, it's all good".

  4. I completely understand not getting too excited about a big redo when you might have to leave. Luckily there is a lot you can do with the fun stuff like pillows, etc. LOVE the chevron-and the black trim was very clever!

  6. oh barbara - that is such a bummer. your stomach mustve sunk when you heard that news. any kind of limbo is awful, but when it comes to the roof over your head, thats the worst. may the odds be in your favor!!

ps - i am TOTALLY SMITTEN with how you lined up that ikat dot fabric. the off center cut and place where the two pieces meet up is so very Madeline Weinrib and you made it look like her $350 pillows!! I LOVE YOUR INGENUITY!!!

  7. Oh crap! You definitely don't want to be painting and doing anything if you aren't sure if you are staying. Hope everything turns out okay and I'm sure your room will be gorgeous regardless!

  8. That's too bad. I've been in a similar situation when we lived in Vancouver. Not easy to deal with the day to day never mind the epic life changes like Jobs and moving on top of it all. Focus of the pretty! Your pillow making skills are sick!! that piping is really nice, as a fellow sewer.I appreciate it!

  9. Fingers crossed for you here too. Being in limbo bites. Your new pillows are looking fab though! The velvet trim is a lovely touch.

  10. I agree with Meesh that being in limbo is the worst thing. It's pretty crappy that the lease expires on Sept 1 and they haven't said anything:( I totally don't blame you for not wanting to paint. You're just making them more money. Actually you should ugly up the place so they sell it to you for the price you want to pay. Good luck and your pillow is amazing. You bought velvet piping or made it?

  11. Gee whiz, Barbara - I seriously think your landlord needs to check out the housing market stats. Is he aware that it's currently a buyer's market in spite of the quick sale stats that conveniently get headlined? It's not all 'that' for sellers right now, not if he wants to get his asking price... and that's a whole other conversation.

I totally get that feeling of limbo, but you know what, your room is going to shine beyond paint and Roman blinds if your sideboard and pillow are any indication. As they say, it's all in the details, and you've clearly got that covered!

  12. Barbara, try not to think about it too much. I know how hard it is because I have been in your situation for 5 years. Uncertainty is really hard but i remind myself constantly that what happened yesterday is over and what happens tomorrow is up in the air so our lives are just today. focus on today and try not to worry. you can't change things. this path of life is hard especially with uncertainty but i have my fingers crossed that the uncertainty is possibilities just waiting to present themselves. thinking of you and hoping things will become clear very soon. love the pillow and the other one you cut out. two of my favorite fabrics!!! love the sideboard too! you have talent and your room will be beautiful where ever it is!

  13. I hope you get to stay put, Barbara, but, if you can't, I hope that it leads to a beautiful new home and life for you. I love the fabric you chose for your accent cushion. You're so talented!
