Don't hesitate to buy area rugs.
Area rugs can cover up ugly flooring. You don't have to spend a fortune to get a nice area rug. Ikea is a great source. There are many carpet companies that sell discounted carpet where you can get carpet edges bound to create a custom area rug. We just went to Home Depot and purchased a lovely off-white shag rug. It really helped fill in space at our last house which had hardwood floors. It works in our present house too, covering up a lovely 90's carpet with a slightly pinkish hue.
