Roman Blind: Finished!

The Roman blind saga has now come to an end.

 I am finished.

My dilemma was trying to find dowels long enough, which was a challenge. But one reader and fellow Canadian blogger, Mel from Junkin Junky, suggested bamboo.  I tried drapery supplies stores but custom cut dowels were $5 each. The bamboo was $0.39 each. Not hard to figure out which I chose. The plant nursery must of thought I was crazy, as I was  going through all their bamboo trying to find the straightest pieces.

Since I have never sewn a working Roman blind before, this was quite an experience.  In retrospect it wasn't too bad, I am now going to sew two more. I found online tutorials were few and missing details I had to figure on my own, so you won't be surprised that I plan on photographing all the steps for the next blind to share the nitty gritty details.

Piece of cake!

Voila!

My son's room is going to get new paint and bedding. The blind was needed as the sun sets later and the other blind wasn't blocking the light. I made this blind with blackout lining. It works so well, so much in fact, that last night he was complaining it was too dark!

Off to cut more fabric for blind #2.

  1. Oooo, I've been waiting for this.

Perfect! I know it's not easy to keep stripes lined up.

I'm really looking forward to your step by step. You are correct, some of those tutorials are not well written, causing me to give up in frustration.

  8. I want step-by-step instructions!!! I made a relaxed roman blind for my kitchen making up the "how-to" of it because I couldn't find directions I was happy with. I'd like to make a functioning roman for my son's room so I definitely want to know how you did this!!!!!!! :-)

  22. Ok that's it! I am having you over to my house! You have so inspired me. Barbara it looks absolutely fabulous! (But I am so stupid when it comes to sewing so I am not so so sure I could do it. But it is worth trying. Right?). Now is that the same Ikea fabric that I also have?

I am back after my whirlwind trip to Sweden. You will see a lot more of me.

    Happy weekend!

  23. I love these!

In high school I made myself roman shades in this same striped fabric (a blue colored stripe so they were not as graphic and beautiful as yours). They live at my mother's house- but I still love them, and I LOVE these! Good job!

  26. Oh I hope you share the ins and outs of making this! I want to learn from your mistakes since I am getting ready to make one for my daughter's nursery. Is yours operable? And if it is did you use the new safety style pull up system?
