{the great switch}

With New Year's still fresh in our minds, the organization bug has hit our home. We decided to bite the bullet yesterday and finally move and switch 3 rooms on our upper floor. Living in a 5 bedroom home has its advantages, it allows for flexibility in room arrangement, or in our situation, re-arrangement.

Our dilemma:

With the kids getting older {2 teens and a tween}, they need a place to "hang out" with their friends. Conflicts were arising when our kids wanted to watch a movie with their friends while their dad felt it was necessary to watch a hockey game in our family room on the main floor.

We needed a solution.

{My daughter putting her drafting skills to work}

The solution:

Move the younger daughter {she was technically in the games room} into her brother's room, whereas he move into the room that was the computer room. The computer and bookcases move into the daughter's former {technically a games room} room that would become a multi-purpose room: a room for the kids to "hang-out", to house the computer and second TV.

Current situation:

Furniture has been moved but walls need to be painted in 2 of the rooms, which is what I am doing today.

 I will make sure to keep you posted as I move forward with the re-design of the 3 rooms.

  2. Sounds like a smart solution! I'm a big proponent of switching rooms around to make it all work for your family as needs change! Looking forward to what you do with the rooms!

  4. Wow, that's an ambitious start to 2011! I was thinking I might rearrange the bookcase in the family room today - you put my project to shame! ;-)

    It's great that you have the flexibility to rearrange so many rooms in your house. Looking forward to seeing how they turn out :-)

  8. Yes, mother of five, here! I found that when they were little we needed a family room, when they were teens, we needed the rec room! We had a huge dry basement and finished it off with a full bath,office,studio, pool table, big screen T.V.,lots of counters and a table. There were many times I wanted to give them back the family room!

  10. Oh I know this routine all too well- we've moved our 4 bedrooms more times than I can count- I think it's one of the top 5 reasons why hubby is refusing to even entertain the thought of another baby- he hates the mere mention of moving rooms again! Good luck with it all and can't wait to see the newly designed rooms:)

  12. you know what?? that drafting paper has me all a-flutter! I actually wonder why i have never used it before? Could it be that i have been separated from a true love all this time!? i think it would quite honestly give me such satisfaction to make a little room and little furniture pieces.
    Ok, must buy some this week!
    Have fun with your switch!
